The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz since February 2026 has triggered one of the most severe global gas supply shocks in years, disrupting nearly 20% of global LNG trade. Following attacks on Ras Laffan, QatarEnergy declared force majeure, suspending shipments to Asian buyers into November and European buyers into December. LNG prices have surged, reaching their highest levels since late 2022 and raising serious concerns about winter supply.
Join our Asia Chapter for an evening presentation that will look at what the crisis means in practice for the people who negotiate, manage and dispute LNG contracts.
Our featured speakers will provide insights into:
- Force majeure under strain: How Hormuz scenarios work under LNG SPA force majeure clauses, including the duty to mitigate, how scarce volumes are allocated and prioritised, and how risk is allocated across linked contracts.
- Pricing and price reviews: The JKM–TTF spread reversed and is now an Asian premium. The panel will discuss how this affects oil-linked and hub-based pricing and what it means for upcoming price reviews. Andrew Way (TWCOG) brings commercial and analytical experience from several Asian LNG price reviews and more than 30 arbitrations.
- Commercial strategy and the energy transition: Stephen Morrell is a Singapore-based LNG commercial leader with 22 years' experience at ExxonMobil. He will look at how sellers and portfolio players are adapting their contracting models.
- The buyer's view: JERA has spent a decade diversifying its supply, and the Middle East now accounts for about 5% of its LNG, most of it bought under long-term contracts. A JERA commercial representative (to be confirmed) will cover diversification, destination flexibility and new procurement strategies, as Asian buyers increasingly turn to US supply.
A networking reception will follow the presentations, providing attendees with an opportunity to continue the conversation and connect with fellow participants. Food and drinks will be provided.
