The AIEN new energy taskforces were established to bring together industry and legal experts to share topical knowledge, map out the various required suite of contracts and associated contractual frameworks needed to deliver a project, and to outline the commercial challenges shaping the future of energy. Each group evaluated where model contracts or practical guidance could help the AIEN community to streamline deals, reduce risk, and accelerate market development in the new energy space.

Hydrogen

This TF evaluated the hydrogen contracting by unpacking the commercial frameworks, infrastructure needs, and market risks. The team mapped contracts across the value chain and explored whether standardized agreements could help projects scale faster.

Status: Completed
Outcome: Recommendation to progress Hydrogen JV agreement and Hydrogen Offtake agreement into Model Contract development

Carbon Capture & Storage

This TF focused on the unique contractual and liability challenges of carbon capture and storage projects. This group addressed the complexity of commercial constructs and regulatory regimes, taking into consideration cross-border complexities, long-term responsibilities, and how model contracts can support wider CCS deployment.

Status: Completed
Outcome: Recommendation to progress CCS JV agreement and CCS offtake agreement into Model Contract development

ESG

The TF explored how ESG commitments may be developed for energy transactions and investor expectations. The task force identified regulatory pressures, and evaluated opportunities for practical, standardized solutions.

Status: Completed
Outcome: Too nascent space and bespoke region to region, project by project; no standardization required at this time.

Renewable Fuels

This TF is scoping the fast-moving world of renewable fuels—covering portfolio of opportunities, required contracting, offtake agreements, and global trade flows. The group will map potential contract flows, deal structures and considers whether template tools could simplify transactions and boost market confidence.

Status: Ongoing

Nuclear

The TF is examining nuclear energy’s role in a low-carbon future, from project finance to risk allocation. The team is evaluating contracting models for large scale industrial projects vs small and micro reactors, and exploring where standardized approaches could unlock new nuclear opportunities.

Status: Ongoing
