Dr. Rüdiger Tscherning

Dr. Rüdiger (Rudi) Tscherning is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law and a member of the Canadian Institute of Resources Law at the University of Calgary, Canada. He is also a Research Fellow in nuclear law and policy at the School of Public Policy, University of Calgary and holds a visiting Associate Professor appointment at the University of Bergen, Faculty of Law. His research and teaching focuses on the regulation of energy infrastructure development (with a particular focus on industrial decarbonization technologies and on the transportation sector), on private international law, and on alternative dispute resolution.
Rudi has very recently been appointed as a member of the AIEN’s education advisory board and serves on the Association’s New Energies Taskforce on Nuclear. He is a member the Government of Alberta’s Nuclear Energy Engagement and Advisory Panel and participates in international working groups on nuclear energy with the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency’s Global Forum on Nuclear Education, Science, Technology and Policy and with the International Nuclear Law Association. He holds a Ph.D. in international construction law and dispute resolution from the University of Heidelberg in Germany and LLM degrees from The Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee and from the University of Nottingham, as well as a LLB degree from Trinity College Dublin. Prior to his academic career, Professor Tscherning practiced as a solicitor in London specializing in energy and infrastructure disputes.
